We have company..
After being here on Malgas for about a week and a half, just the 2 of us, 3 people have joined us. So we are now just a tad bit less deserted.. The 3 are researchers from the Marine Coastal Management here in South Africa checking on the birds and doing some research on the seal predations. Weird, now it’s busy here, haha.. who would have thought. But yeah, so far I’m enjoying myself so it’s all good.
But okay so what have I been up to..
I’ve gone for another swim which was really cool cuz there was a seal not even 15 meters away predating fish right from where I was in the water. Then you realize, like whoa, how many people get to experience that and yet it seems so normal when it’s happening, but yeah I was impressed. I wanted to go swimming yesterday but the tide was up and the waves were a bit too big for lil ole me, didn’t want to end up banged up against the jetty of course. We did have company like a few days ago as well but only for a few hours as they were here to ring the oyster catcher fledglings, for the rest yeah. Been doing my observations, cooking once in a while, laundry needs to be done, switched rooms since I noticed that the bugs were just in that room cuz it didn’t matter which mattress I used they just kept attacking me. ARGH!.. But now I’m a lot of bugs less, just a few once in a while, so I can still enjoy my war wounds, yet I might soon get one from the damn Kelp gulls here, they are too damn rude! They are gonna peck me in the head soon. They too damn hungry, they predated 2 of our nests as well and yeah lost a chick to starvation today also. Sometimes, nature does suck! But okay, trying to not think about it, cuz this shit is normal. But yeah, what else oh yeah, so I carried the damn centrifuge all this damn way and what happens, I guess I won’t be taking samples for my hormone analysis anymore since it just doesn’t wanna work here, guess there isn’t enough power being produced by the solar, it doesn’t even wanna open damnit. But okay so I can still sex them and stuff so we shall see. We ringed some more chicks to try and enlarge my sample size for recurring begging but we shall see, me did look at my data today and at least it looks like I’m not doin it for nuffin since there sis something in it, but okay it is kinda logical. The whole point was to do hormone anaylisis to see if there is a correlation but okay, maybe some faecal samples will do since mine from Ichaboe don’t think they made it. Shall see..
Day before yesterday there was a comet flying over, very awesome, waaayyy beautiful, don’t think I ever saw one that clear. For the rest here the weather changes off and on, had to even wear my sweater the other day, ha.. and the day after laid in my bikini. Yippie, haha.. It was Sunday I allowed myself a mini break as if it were weekend. Today really misty, looked spooky. Cool though.. and yeah also filling my time up with helping Ralf catch fledglings, getting better at the weighing and measuring and all. Hmm.. Guess we’ll be here for another week and a half or so, we shall see when the boat is gonna head this way. I like staying here so am not exactly in a hurry to head back to land, but yeah, then I have a month or so to chill in the Cape and also work on my report a bit I guess and I kinda need to study since I did bring a school book, but okay, I am on my 4th reading book which is nearly done. Reminds me I should read a lot more since it is really nice, less tv I guess. Hmm,.. maybe I do have a resolution for the new year and yet it is already nearly February. Weird, time flies. And yeah I guess I am missing some stuff in Holland and all. Not miss as in missing something, but like I’m not up to date haha.. I am getting my text massages which are helping, it’s weird but funny. The world goes on while mine is kinda on pause. Funny. But okay besides chasing the pelicans away here every morning the days are filled with checking nests and putting my data on the pc and taking lotsa pictures, haha.. thousands I will have after this for sure haha.. okay maybe I’m on 1500 or so now. But yeah, let me sign off..
